Free trade - A Myth?
Protectionism Protectionist policies, such as tariffs, subsidies, and other barriers to trade, are still used by governments to protect domestic industries and jobs. These policies make it difficult to achieve true free trade.
Unequal bargaining power: Not all countries have the same bargaining power in international trade negotiations. Politically powerful & wealthier countries often have greater leverage in negotiations, which can lead to imbalanced agreements.
Different economic & cultural history: Countries have different economic systems and political structures, which can make it difficult to align their economic interests and goals on equal terms. Cultural differences make it difficult for nations to honor products or services from countries that are not aligned culturally. For example, Pork meat is not allowed in Muslim nations.
Domestic political pressures: Domestic political pressures can also affect trade policies. Many politicians believe in slogan games and try to please their local populations. They are often reluctant to support international trade agreements that are perceived as harmful to domestic industries even though they may be good for the country in long-term vision.
International conflicts: International conflicts, such as political tensions or economic challenges or many times military conflicts, can disrupt trade flows and make it difficult to achieve free trade. During the Iraq war, the maximum benefits were taken by American companies. Syria & Libya have been difficult nations for the past many years for all exporters.
The time has come now for the political class and nations to look at the world as a whole. We are facing one of the toughest times in history. There are environmental challenges as well as deep economic challenges in many parts of the globe. We all now need to work in tandem to serve the larger interest of the "world " as a whole for maximum benefits to the human race.
